KC Ice Center in Shawnee, KS offers Learn To Play Hockey Programs. These programs are 8 week sessions and are usually offered year round. Participants do not need to know how to skate. The class is divided into 3 levels. Beginning skaters start with Level 1. This program focuses on basic hockey skills. Participants in this program are required to have their own hockey equipment. KC Stars Hockey offers House League programs from September-March for the main season and April-May for the spring season. We participate in a citywide league that competes against other hockey teams in the KC Metro area and surrounding communities. All USA Hockey age groups are offered including; 6U & 8U, 10U Squirts, 12U Peewees and 14U Bantams. Our coaching staff utilizes player evaluations to balance out the younger youth teams. Teams generally practice 1-2 times a week and play 1-2 games per weekend.
House Select hockey is for house league players that would like to supplement their house league experience with additional practices and games. Players must play Stars House league in order to be eligible to tryout for a Stars House Select team. House Select tryouts are typically held in early October after the house league teams have been formed. Select teams generally receive 8-10 additional practices. They play 10-12 games in the Midwest Amateur Hockey Select League which is 3 weekends against teams from Des Moines, Omaha, Lincoln, Fremont, Sioux City, Kearney NE, Wichita, etc. They also typically attend 1-2 out of town tournaments typically in Omaha or St. Louis. There is an additional fee for House Select.
KC Stars have both JV and Varsity teams that play in the Mid America High School Hockey league. Teams that participate in the league include KC Stars, Jr Mavs, Carriage Club, Rockhurst, Saints, St Joseph, Wichita, Springfield, Mo, Jefferson City, Mo, Springdale, Ark. Teams start to practice in early September. Games start late October or early November. Play-offs and Championships are mid February.
In 2015 KC Stars and KC Jr Mavs combined to form the KC Mavs Travel hockey program. Travel hockey is for the advanced player wanting to play at a competitive level and practice more. The level of competition is more advanced, the time and financial commitment is greater and typically requires travel of twice a month. Our Travel teams compete in the MoHockey league against St. Louis teams. They also host and attend away tournaments. Some travel teams also compete on a National Level. Try-outs and teams are formed for all levels in August. Divisions may have multiple levels of travel teams depending on the player turnout and skill level. These levels include 10U Squirt, 12U Peewee, 14U Bantam and 16U Midget age groups. Our travel teams also participate in many regional and national tournaments throughout the season. Travel teams have a consistent practice schedule with practices held twice weekly. Games are on the weekends and are scheduled by the travel team scheduler/manager.
Our High School JV-Varsity (AA) travel hockey program is KC Jets. The Jets play in the Midwest High School Hockey League against teams from Omaha, Lincoln, Sioux City, Ames, Des Moines, Waterloo, Quad Cities, Dubuque and Cedar Rapids. Jets tryouts are mid August. Teams start practicing early September. They have 50% home games. Season ending tournament and Championships are typically late February or the first weekend of March. The Jets also offer several weekly summer camps to help players prepare for tryouts and the fall/winter season.
