Coaching & Volunteer Requirements for 2019-2020 Season

1. Register with USA Hockey

Register online with USA Hockey and get membership #. This must be done each year. The cost is $56 for coaches (free for off-ice volunteers). Check that you are coaching/volunteering in KANSAS, Midwest Amateur Hockey Association (not Missouri Hockey) even if you live in the state of Missouri.

2. Submit your USA Hockey Membership # to KCYHA

Please submit your USA Hockey membership # to us electronically by clicking on the following link and filling out the registration. (This is the same registration link as above.)

3. Consent to Screen/Background Check

All Coaches, Team Managers, Volunteers, Locker Room Monitors, Board Members, Team Chaperones must have a current background check or consent to be screened BEFORE on-ice or off-ice activities. When you register with KCYHA, our system will know if your background check/screening is current or not. If your screening is not current, you will be emailed a link in a few days from MWAHA/Sterling Volunteers that will contain a link for you to submit consent.  If you were screened last season you will not receive an email.

4. Online SafeSport Training

All Coaches, Team Managers, Volunteers, Locker Room Monitors, Board Members, Team Chaperones must have current SafeSport training and it must be completed PRIOR to coaching/volunteering on-ice or off-ice. If you took the training during the 2018-2019 season, it is still valid for the 2019-2020 season. However if yours has expired or you are new, you will need to complete the full module which takes about 90-120 minutes to complete. Must be completed before participating in any on-ice or off-ice events. This training is good for one season then you can take a 30 minute refresher course the following seasons.

5. Age Specific Modules - COACHES

USA Hockey requires that coaches take an online course specific for the age of players you will be coaching. You only have to take each age module once. This module needs to be completed BEFORE coaching or any contact with players on-ice or off-ice.

6. USA Hockey Coaching Certification Class Level 1, 2, 3, 4

A coach must progress through the education system every year.  All coaches must have proper CEP certification by December 31st each season. Even though December 31st is the deadline, its IMPORTANT to note that there's usually only one class held locally in the KC area in early fall.

The expiration of your certification depends on the level you have achieved. Make sure you check your certification status if unsure.  New coaches start with Level 1 and advance one level each year unless you are coaching U8, you can stay at Level 1 until you advance to Squirts.
