More Ice, Better Value, Improved Program

Below you will find more in depth Season info for both House and Travel

HOUSE INFORMATION

We want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who came to our open house. We appreciate the tremendous turnout and continued loyal support. Here are answers to some of the questions we most often heard.

WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU MADE IN THE HOUSE HOCKEY PROGRAM?
The biggest change this year is in the amount of practice ice time we are providing our players. Traditionally, Kansas City has always fallen short compared to other major markets in providing ice time to house hockey players. For young developing hockey players, there is no substitute for time on the ice. We are committed to providing every player with as much ice time as possible. We considered having only 22 hours of practice ice time for our house teams but with cooperation of Kansas City Ice Center we are able to offer up to 31 hours of practice ice time, which in effect increases house players practice ice more than 50%.
HOW MUCH PRACTICE ICE TIME WILL HOUSE HOCKEY PLAYERS HAVE?
Atom---Last year’s Atom teams got 18 hours of practice ice time. This year it has been increased by 50% to 27 hours.
Mite---Last year’s Mite teams got 20 hours of practice ice time. This year it has been increased by 48% to 31 hours.
Squirt---Last year’s Squirt teams got 21 hours of practice ice time. This year it has been increased by 48% to 31 hours.
Peewee---Last year’s Peewee teams got 20 hours of practice time. This year it has been increased by 55% to 31 hours.
Bantam---Last year’s Bantam teams got 20 hours of practice time. This year it has been increased by 55% to 31 hours.
All house practices will be at KC Ice Center.
HOW MANY GAMES WILL WE PLAY?
All levels will have a minimum of 18 games, plus end of season play-offs. All games are included in the player fee. Games will be played in the KCAHA city wide league.
WHAT ARE THE PRICES THIS YEAR COMPARED TO LAST YEAR?
(Before going thru this year’s pricing, it is important to know that the Stars have not had a price increase in three years and had we stayed at Pepsi Midwest, our fees would have gone up 5%, according to our contract.)
Atom---Last year’s Atom paid $700. This year the fee is $725---an increase of 3 ½ %. However, based on the additional 9 hours of practice time, per hour cost has gone from $18.42 last year to $15.43 this year---down 16 ¼ %.
Mite---Last year’s Mite paid $895. This year’s fee is staying at $895. However, based on the additional 11 hours of practice time, per hour cost has gone from $22.37 last year to $15.43 this year---down 31 % from last year.
Squirt---Last year’s Squirt paid $895 per player. This year’s fee is $995---an increase of 11%. However, based on the additional 10 hours of practice time, per hour cost has gone from $22.37 last year to $19.90 this year---down 11 %.
Peewee---Last year’s Peewee’s paid $895 per player. This year’s fee is $995---an increase of 11%. However, we have added 11 hours of additional practice ice time, per hour cost has gone from $22.94 last year to $19.90 this year---down 13 ¼ % from last year.
Bantam---Last year’s Bantam paid $895 per player. This year’s fee is $995---an increase of 11%. However, we have added 11 hours of additional practice ice time, the per hour cost has gone from $22.94 last year to $19.90 this year---down 13 ¼% from last year.
HOW MUCH MORE ICE TIME IS AVAILABLE AND WHAT DOES IT COST?
INCLUDED in the above house league fee are 3 pre-season conditioning practices run by Larry Pedrie, our Director of Player Development. Additionally, all Stars House players get FREE access to all Public Skate sessions at KCIC. This amounts to approximately 90 hours of potential additional hours of ice time at NO COST.
WILL THERE BE HOUSE SELECT TEAMS?
Yes. House Select tryouts for Squirts, Peewees, and Bantams will be in October. Select teams are composed of players from each house team. Select teams play 3 weekends in the Midwest Hockey League and travel 2-3 times to tournaments in the Midwest area. Midwest Hockey League will be holding Cross-Ice Jamborees for the Mite Division.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM MY STARS HOUSE HOCKEY EXPERIENCE?
The best coaching available---Our program starts with Tom Tilley, our Director of Hockey and Larry Pedrie our Director of Player Development. Supporting them at the Atom and Mite Level is Paul Antonenko. Paul just arrived new to KC from Minneapolis with his family of 5 hockey players. Paul will serve as the U6-U8 hockey director, a position similar to the one he held in Minnesota. Paul will be responsible for practice planning, structure and working on the ice with our Atom and Mite coaches.
At the Squirt, Peewee, and Bantam Levels, Larry Pedrie and Dean Nelson will be providing the practice planning and supervision for our house coaches. Dean comes to us from Rochester, Minnesota where he has coached elite travel hockey for the last 10 years.
A robust schedule of practices---This year we will be offering our house players significantly more ice time than any program in the area as we know that the more time our players can be on the ice the better hockey players they will become.
A fun experience---It is our goal at the Stars to provide the most enjoyable, educational and enthusiastic program for any player in the greater Kansas City area. The Stars have secured a new home that we can call our own.

TRAVEL INFORMATION

We are about to begin the 12th year of Kansas City Stars Travel hockey. Below are some frequently asked questions and answers that we’d like to share with our membership and travel families.

WHAT TRAVEL TEAMS WILL YOU HAVE?
There will be Squirt A and AA, Peewee A and AA, Bantam(s), and Midget AA High School teams.
WHAT LEAGUE WILL THEY PLAY IN?
The youth teams (Squirt, Peewee and Bantam) will play in the Midwest Hockey League and also play in the MoHockey (St. Louis) League. The Midget AA JV/Varsity teams play in the Midwest High School Hockey League.
HOW MUCH PRACTICE WILL THERE BE?
We believe that travel hockey players need to get as much practice ice time as possible. Last year we were only able to offer 46 hours of travel practice ice time per player. Some programs this year are only offering 50 hours per player. In order to improve our Travel Program and become more compliant with USA Hockey’s American Development Model (ADM) regarding practice hours to game ratio -the Stars travel hockey program will include approximately 72 hours of practice ice time per player during the upcoming season. Each travel team will have 2 practices per week. Each practice is a FULL SHEET practice for 1 ½ hours, resulting in 3 hours of practice ice a week, for a total of 72 hours.
WHAT IS THE COST OF TRAVEL HOCKEY?
The base fee for Stars travel hockey for Squirts, Peewees, and Bantam for 2011-12 will be $1,295 per player. This fee reflects practice ice time only, so as to be consistent with costs quoted by other programs. Individual travel teams will continue to schedule games and tournaments, consistent with the guidelines presented below, and are responsible for securing game ice.
WHAT DOES THE $1,295 INCLUDE AND HOW DOES IT COMPARE TO LAST YEAR?
As noted above the Stars Travel Program is increasing practice ice to 72 hours. This compares with 46 hours of practice ice time we were able to offer at Pepsi Ice Midwest last season.  Last year the travel charge was $1,325 per player, which resulted in a cost of $28.80 per practice hour provided. This year with the understanding and cooperation of Kansas City Ice Center we have been able to adjust  our ice utilization needs so as to be able to restructure our fees and actually reduce the travel fee to $1,295, thus providing more value to our players for the investment made by the parents. This year our hourly cost has actually dropped to $17.98 per hour.
HOW MANY WEEKENDS WILL THE STARS TEAMS TRAVEL?
Individual team schedules will be finalized later, but generally many of our games are already laid out per the following Organizational template and include:
MoHockey/St. Louis League: 4 weekends/16 games. One weekend may be at home.
Midwest Hockey League: 3 weekends/12 games. One weekend may be at home.
Home Tournament at KCIC: 1 tournament weekend 4 games.
Other Tournaments or Friendship Games: 4 weekends/16 games. Locations may include Chicago, St. Louis, Minnesota, Oklahoma City, Omaha, Des Moines, etc., or here in Kansas City at KCIC
One can plan on approximately 48 games, beginning in October and going through late February. The Stars Director of Hockey and Director of Player Development will review and assist teams in creating their schedules with an eye to the appropriate level of competition, travel requirements and cost.
WHEN ARE TRAVEL TRYOUTS?
A complete schedule of tryouts is posted on the Stars website---www.kcstarshockey.com.
ANYTHING ELSE I SHOULD KNOW?
Yes. The Stars will be holding FREE pre-tryout conditioning practices for all Squirt, Peewee and Bantam travel team candidates to get their skating legs going. The clinics will be led by our new Director of Player Development, Larry Pedrie, and the Stars travel coaches. See the Stars website for a complete schedule of the clinics.
In addition, KCIC is providing FREE public skating for the entire season for all Stars house and travel players wearing their Stars jerseys!
